Why mesh, and not a perforated cover
The cheap covers sold at hardware stores are punched sheet with holes big enough to see through. That is fine under a maple and useless under a cedar — needles drop straight through the holes and pack the trough solid, except now there is a lid screwed over the top of the mess.
Fine stainless mesh is chosen for the Lower Mainland specifically because cedar, fir and hemlock needles are the local problem. The apertures are smaller than a needle is wide, so the needles stay on the surface, dry out, and blow off.
